My name is João Sarmento. For several years I practiced and studied photography. My work covered many fields. I started by developing a very graphic language. Through that I acquired a solid sense of composition and visual language. I ended up taking an interest in documentary photography. I developed a style that I understand to have maturity. I eventually moved within photography as well. In a sense this site is a chronicle of that journey. In 1993 I stopped doing photography and moved to video. I was particularly interested in documentary making, but I did also a lot of other things. You can see some of this work in the links at the start of this site and below.

With the advent of mobile phones with cameras, I started taking pictures again. As I mention elsewhere on this site, it liberated me from previous perceptions I developed about photography. Mobile phones kick started this new process, and I’m back to practicing it again.
